NextUp Travel App

Your Trip. Clearly Organized. Always One Step Ahead.

Situation

I've been doing CX and UX work for over 10 years, but I learned skills on the job versus being formally trained. So recently I earned a Google UX Design certificate to ensure my skills were up-to-date.

Until this class, the majority of my work focused on strategy, design and research. Literally sketching wireframes, storyboards, etc. So through the class, I learned how to Figma to create clickable prototypes and fully designed websites and apps.

For my class project, I created several deliverables that led to the development of a mobile app for travelers.

Why travel? I've been traveling the world for decades, typically planning while en route from one destination to another, using a variety of websites to find the most economical flights, stays, transportation and tours.

The frustration with this approach is that all of my bookings are in disparate locations. I wanted a way to consolidate all of my bookings in one place. So when I open the app, my first message would be "Next Up" on the itinerary, with details.

Approach

If you're familiar with design thinking, you'll know the framework - Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test.

From each of these steps are various artifacts that enable the designer to understand the users -- their needs, problems and goals -- identify solutions that might meet those goals, and create prototypes for testing ideas before development.

I've included here my thinking and a few artifacts I created as part of my process.

The app is not yet launched.

Problem Statement:

Alex is an independent, on the go traveler who books flights, stays and experiences across multiple apps, bus has no single, reliable place to see everything she has booked in one clear, real time view —

making it difficult to stay oriented, avoid conflicts and confidently decide what to do next while already on the road.

Goal Statement:

Help Alex stay oriented and confident while traveling by giving her a single, reliable, real time view of her trip that supports flexible, in the moment decision making without changing how or where she books.

Hypothesis:
If we provide Alex with a mobile first hub that automatically consolidates all of her travel bookings from any source into a real time, location aware timeline and highlights available time gaps and conflicts, then Alex will feel more oriented and confident during her trip and will. Make faster, lower stress in-trip booking decisions.

Value Proposition:

For independent, on the go travelers who book as they go, our app automatically brings together flights, stays and experiences from any app into one clear, mobile friendly real time itinerary and helps travelers confidently decide what to do next while already on the road.
